Health Commons offers foundational training grounded in a health equity framework to support community organizations, Community Ambassadors and peer workers, government, and other partners in the following areas. Areas of Service

  • Role as a Community Ambassador - Focuses on how best to serve diverse communities. It includes how ambassadors can introduce themselves safely, and collect and disseminate information in their communities. Peer-led role play is explored to prepare for various possible encounters, and resources to be shared with the community are provided.

  • Trauma Informed Care - The prevalence and impact of trauma, what trauma is, how it manifests itself and how to respond effectively with a trauma-informed lens.Social Determinants of Health - The ways in which health is impacted by the social determinants of health such as race, gender, citizenship status, housing, income, employment and food security.

  • Emotional Conversations and De-escalation Training - How to respond to residents who present with a range of emotions from grief and sadness to anger and rage. Aims to equip participants with skills to de-escalate emotional situations and respond appropriately and safely.

  • Service Worker Self Care - How to avoid vicarious trauma, practice self care and avoid burnout. 

  • Introduction to Finding Useful Resources for Residents - Identifying common needs in the community and services and supports available. Provides an overview of how to search for services, eligibility, and locations. Advice on validating information using a research based approach to check source, motivation and relevance of information to all populations. 

  • Holistic Healthcare - Considers what total wellness looks like from varied cultural narratives. How to recognize and connect to these medical epistemologies when serving diverse communities. 

  • Mental Health - An Introduction - Recognizing the signs of mental illness and building empathy. How to have safe conversations in order to make a referral when someone needs support. 

  • Introduction to Anti-Oppressive work - Introduction to bias-checking and shifting prejudicial practices in our work and environment. Encourages practice of self-reflection and connects participants with appropriate tools and experts from the community to support them in their own sustainable practice. 

  • Culturally-Safe Care - Explores how to partner with various communities to match resources that are appropriate to their needs.
